Before You Name It

Before You Name It

In the first moments after waking, cortisol hasn't yet surged and the nervous system holds a natural parasympathetic openness — HRV is elevated, vagal tone is high. Soft, undirected attention in this window keeps that biological intelligence online before analysis crowds it out.

Before you reach for your phone, pause. Sit at the edge of the bed or by a window. Let your eyes land somewhere without directing them — a patch of wall, the grain of a table, the way light falls across the floor. Notice what stops your gaze. Not why. Not what it means. Just: something caught. Something registered as worth looking at.

Michael Singer called this the witness — the part of you that observes before the inner roommate begins its commentary. He understood what neuroscience now confirms: the registering happens first, in the body, before the thinking mind arrives to sort and classify. What catches your gaze isn't random. It's consciousness reading the room before the mind has decided what everything means.

That's the signal. Your body knew before your mind did. Now bring that same quality of attention to one sound in the room. One texture under your hands. Let beauty do its pointing — marking what is real, what is here, before the day's analysis begins. Attraction is not temptation. It is intelligence moving before the mind has classified it as safe.

You already know how to notice. This practice is just remembering that.
