Here, Now, Entirely
Begin by letting your hands settle on your thighs. Not arranging yourself. Not preparing. Just letting them land.
Feel your feet on the floor. The whole sole, heel to toe. If you're wearing shoes, feel through them — the contact is still there.
Now, with each exhale, let your weight drop a little more into the chair. Not slumping. Just releasing the subtle effort of holding yourself up. The floor is holding you. The chair is holding you. You don't need to do it.
Stay here for a few breaths.
Here is something that might surprise you: presence isn't something you achieve. It isn't a state you travel to, or a skill you develop, or a frequency you tune into. Presence is what remains when you stop reaching for something other than this.
This moment — the temperature of the air, the weight in your hands, the slight hum of whatever is around you — this is already happening. You don't have to make it happen. You only have to notice that it's true.
That's the whole practice, really. Everything else is just a way of letting that land.
Place one hand on your sternum. The center of your chest, where bone meets breath.
Breathe in for a count of four. Not forcing it full — just allowing it.
Breathe out for a count of six.
The longer exhale is doing something specific: it's activating the vagus nerve, the long wandering nerve that runs from brainstem through chest and belly, carrying signals between your organs and your brain. When the exhale extends past the inhale, your heart rate slows into a slight rhythmic fluctuation researchers call heart rate variability — a signal that your nervous system is regulated, coherent, at ease. This is what cardiac coherence feels like from the inside. Quiet. A little steadier than before.
Your body already understands this. It's been doing it your whole life. You're just making it conscious now.
Breathe in for four. Out for six. A few more times.
Feel the hand on your chest rise and fall.
Now, without removing your hand, let your awareness soften outward. The room around you. The sounds at the edges. The slight sense of space beyond your body.
You don't have to name any of it. You don't have to hold it. Just notice that it's there, and that you're here inside it.
Coherence doesn't require silence or stillness or a perfect environment. It only requires this: breathing slowly, feeling your body, staying with what's actually true right now.
You can bring your hand back to your thigh whenever you're ready. Or keep it where it is.
What matters is this: the presence you just touched isn't somewhere you had to go. It was here before you started. It will be here when you close this email and step back into your day.
You don't have to find your way back to it.
You only have to remember, whenever it occurs to you, that you never actually left.
