Light Through the Skin
Morning light touching skin does more than warm the surface. Photoreceptors in the epidermis signal the nervous system toward wakefulness, serotonin begins to rise, and when breath slows to meet that warmth, the vagus nerve responds — HRV increases, the stress architecture of the night quietly softens.
Sit or stand where light can reach you. If the sun is out, let it fall on your hand. Look at your hand the way you might look at something you have never quite seen before — the ridges, the small hairs catching light at the edge, the warmth moving just beneath the surface. This is not a metaphor. This is your body, here, in the morning.
Let a breath expand your ribs. Feel the movement from inside — the bones shifting slightly, the skin stretching to meet the air. Exhale slowly. Let the light be where it is, and let your breath be where it is. You are not performing anything right now. You are not hidden from anything.
Thich Nhat Hanh called this interbeing — the recognition that there is no clean boundary where you end and the morning begins. He was not speaking poetically. He meant that your cells are in contact with the world at every moment, that breathing is an act of exchange, that ordinary moments like this one are not the approach to awakening but its very substance. The science confirms what he knew by other means: presence reorganizes the body.
One more breath. The light has not moved. You have not moved. Illumination is not somewhere ahead of you — it is the quality of attention you bring to a hand in morning sun, a breath felt in the ribs, a moment you chose not to rush past.
