Mapping the Edges of My Control
You wake this morning carrying the weight of things that were never yours to hold. The presentation you'll give, the response you'll receive, the way your words land in someone else's heart. The weather. Your child's choices. The economy. The timeline of your healing. You've been exhausting yourself trying to command the uncommandable, and today you're going to draw a new map.
Florence Scovel Shinn taught that "intuition is a spiritual faculty and does not explain, but simply points the way." When you stop trying to control outcomes, you free yourself to listen to this quiet pointing. The exhaustion you feel isn't a sign you need to grip harder. It's a signal that you've wandered into territory that was never meant for you to navigate.
Begin where you are. Take three slow breaths and place one hand on your heart. Now, bring to mind something that's been consuming your mental energy lately—something you've been trying to force, convince, or control into being. Don't analyze it. Just let it rest in your awareness like a stone in your palm. Feel its weight.
Now ask yourself gently: Do I actually have the power to determine the outcome of this? Can I control another person's feelings, choices, or circumstances? Can I force the timing? Can I guarantee the result?
As you sit with this, notice what softens. Notice what becomes possible when you admit the truth of your limitations. Rumi reminds us that "the wound is the place where the Light enters you"—and sometimes that wound is the breaking open of our need to control. In that opening, something more intelligent than your will can work.
Here's what matters: You have dominion over your choices, your effort, your attention, your response, and your willingness to trust. You have influence over how you show up. You do not have dominion over how others receive you, when things happen, or what the universe decides to do with your efforts once you've released them.
Sit for one more moment with this distinction. Feel it in your body. Where does control live in you, and where does trust?
Your map is redrawn. The edges are clearer now.
Today's intention Whenever I notice myself trying to control something beyond my reach, I'll pause and ask: Is this mine to command? Then I'll place my energy where it actually belongs.
