The Body Already Knows

The Body Already Knows

Turning attention inward — to sensation, weight, breath — activates the brain's insular cortex, the neural hub for interoception. Vagal tone rises as the nervous system shifts out of vigilance; the body's signals become audible again, beneath the mental noise.

Before you open your journal, sit with both feet flat on the floor. Feel the weight of your legs, the pressure of the chair beneath you. Take one slow breath and let your attention drop from your head into your chest, your belly, your hips.

Notice what is already present — not what you think you should feel, but what is actually here. A tightness below the ribs. Warmth behind the sternum. A low hum of unease or ease.

Thich Nhat Hanh called this returning home — not arriving somewhere new, but recognizing the ground you were always standing on. He taught that the body is not something to be managed or decoded, but opened to. The instrument does not make music by being full of interpretation. It makes music by becoming available.

Now write one sentence: Right now, my body feels _____ and it's telling me _____. Don't edit. Don't explain. Just name it.

Your body has been speaking all morning — this practice is simply learning to write it down.
