The Body as Soil

The Body as Soil

Diaphragmatic breathing — belly before chest — activates the vagus nerve, shifting the nervous system toward parasympathetic dominance. HRV rises, cortisol softens, and the body becomes receptive rather than braced.

Sit or stand with both feet flat on the floor. Press down through your heels — not hard, just steady. Notice the floor pressing back. That exchange is real.

Place one hand on your belly, the other on your chest. Breathe slowly until you feel your belly hand rise first. Do this three times.

Now bring to mind one thing you want to grow — a project, a change, a quality in yourself. Hold it lightly. Thich Nhat Hanh called this "interbeing" — the recognition that nothing grows in isolation, that every seed requires a living relationship with the ground that holds it. Your intention is not separate from your body. It lives here.

Then return attention to your feet, your weight, the temperature of the air on your skin.

Your vision needs ground before it needs sunlight. This body is that ground.
