The Body That Remembers

Diaphragmatic breathing like this activates the vagus nerve directly — each slow exhale increases heart rate variability, signaling the nervous system that threat has passed.

Sit with both feet flat on the floor. Feel the weight of your heels pressing down. Take one slow breath in through your nose, then let it fall out through your mouth — not pushed, just released.

Now place one hand on your sternum and one on your belly. Notice which hand moves first when you inhale. Soften the upper hand. Let the lower one rise.

Do this three times. On the fourth breath, pause at the top — two counts — then release slowly.

Eckhart Tolle taught that presence is only possible when the body is no longer treated as an obstacle. He wasn't speaking metaphorically — he was pointing at exactly what the science now confirms: that ease is a trainable state, not a lucky accident. What you are doing here is practicing ease — not waiting for something to go wrong before you allow softness, but rehearsing it now, when nothing demands it. The nervous system learns from repetition. This is the repetition.

Your nervous system is listening. Every breath like this is a small training. Over time, the body learns: this is what safe feels like. You cannot train what you are always bracing against. Ease must be practiced when nothing is wrong — and you are practicing it now.

You are building something real.
