The Evidence
When attention deliberately lands on something present and real — not to fix it, just to meet it — the prefrontal cortex activates and the amygdala's alarm quiets. Neuroplasticity means this isn't a gift; it's a pathway, laid down through practice, made more available each time you use it.
Sit where you are. Don't reach for comfort — stay with what's present. Notice what's tight in your chest, heavy in your shoulders. Don't fix it.
Now look around, or close your eyes and listen. Find one thing that registers: a slant of light, the texture of your own breath, the weight of your hands. Not beautiful in a greeting-card way. Just: real. Noticed. Felt.
Thich Nhat Hanh called this stopping — not to escape the difficulty, but to let the present moment fully land. He taught that the capacity to arrive here, in what is, without fleeing toward what's wished for, is not passivity. It confirms that the eye has been trained past the preference for ease.
That noticing is the signal. Not proof that things are fine — proof that your faculty works. The eye that finds beauty in suffering isn't escaping. It's arriving.
The fact that you can still see it means the instrument is intact.
