The Soft Edges

The Soft Edges

When you soften your gaze and breathe slowly into the body, biophotons — light emitted by living cells — are already at work in this quiet exchange, and your nervous system begins to downregulate, shifting toward the coherence that makes presence possible.

Sit where light touches you — a window, a lamp, any gentle source. Notice where the warmth meets your skin. Now let your attention trace that border slowly: the line where your arm ends and the air begins. Don't sharpen it. Let it blur slightly, the way a flame's edge does if you soften your gaze.

Breathe into the outline of your body. Feel how it isn't fixed — your breath expands it, releases it. The skin is a meeting place, not a wall. You are not sealed off. You are in constant, quiet exchange with everything around you.

Florence Scovel Shinn understood this long before the instruments could measure it. She wrote that the light within a person is always moving, always completing itself — never lost, only changing form. What you feel right now at the edges of your skin is exactly that: the light you have gathered, still in motion, still alive, passing through you into the world without being diminished.

This is not dissolution. This is arrival — the self made visible precisely because it has stopped defending its edges. The light does not leave. It changes form, as all living things must, to complete its journey.
