The Two Voices

When you observe competing thoughts without collapsing into either one, the prefrontal cortex activates as a witness — and in that gap, neuroplasticity begins its quiet work, loosening the grooves of old reactivity and opening new ones.

There is a voice inside you that knows what it wants. It is clear, insistent, sometimes a little loud. This morning, you are going to let it speak first.

Pick up your journal. Set a timer for three minutes. Write from that voice — the one with the opinion, the preference, the grievance, the longing. Write it fast, without editing. Let it say everything it needs to say.

Now put the pen down. Breathe.

There is another voice. It has been waiting. It is quieter — not because it is weaker, but because it lives a little deeper. Set the timer again. Let this voice write. What does it want? What is it truly asking for, beneath the surface of the disagreement?

Dr. Joe Dispenza was naming this long before the imaging studies caught up. He calls it becoming the observer — the state in which the brain shifts out of the stress chemistry of reactivity and into genuine coherence. The science confirms what he mapped: when you stop collapsing into one voice and begin to witness all of them, the nervous system settles, and something new becomes possible. The two voices you just wrote are not enemies. They are two parts of you, each carrying something real, each asking to be heard rather than won.

Now place one hand flat on the open page. Feel the paper under your palm. Read both voices back — not to decide which one is right, but simply to witness what each one is truly asking for. Integration begins here. Not in resolution. In listening.

The light that lands today is not the light of having figured it out. It is the light of your own capacity to hold the full conversation.
