Eckhart Tolle teaches that presence is the antidote to the ego's grip. Lao Tzu wrote that the Tao accomplishes everything by insisting on nothing — wu wei, the power of non-interference.
The breath is the simplest teacher. You cannot command it and stay relaxed. You can only observe.
Breath Observation — 5 minutes
Sit comfortably. Eyes closed. Hands resting in your lap.
Notice your breath. Don't change it. Don't deepen it or slow it. Just watch it move in and out.
When the mind wanders — to the day ahead, to something you're trying to control — gently return to the sensation of breath. At the nostrils. In the chest. In the belly.
Stay with it for five minutes. Not fixing. Not improving. Just observing.
When you're done, open your eyes slowly. The practice is complete when you realize you were never in charge of the breath to begin with.
