The Living Plumb Line
The body's balance system is in constant conversation with the brain — proprioceptive signals from your feet and ankles, vestibular input from your inner ear, and subtle postural corrections managed by the cerebellum all fire together in loops that keep you upright. This continuous negotiation also regulates your autonomic nervous system: when you slow down and attend to it, vagal tone rises and the stress response softens.
Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Close your eyes. Notice that you are already moving — small, constant adjustments at your ankles, your hips, the base of your skull. Balance is not a fixed position you achieve; it is something your body is always negotiating.
Sway gently forward until you feel the weight shift to the balls of your feet. Then back, to your heels. Find the place in the middle — not frozen, but alive. Let your arms hang. Breathe into your chest and feel your ribs expand outward in all directions.
