The Practice of Being Here
Set this down for a moment — whatever you were carrying in your mind before you opened this. It can wait ten minutes. It will still be there.
Sit where you are. Place both feet flat on the floor. Let your hands rest open in your lap, palms up. This is enough.
Take one breath in through your nose — slow, no forcing. Let it out through your mouth with a slight, quiet release, like you're fogging a mirror. Do this twice more. Each long exhale stimulates the vagus nerve, beginning a shift toward rest. You don't have to believe it. The body does it whether you believe it or not.
Now close your eyes, or soften your gaze toward the floor. Bring your attention to the soles of your feet. Not the idea of your feet — the actual physical sensation. The pressure against the floor. The temperature. Any faint tingling. Let your awareness simply sit there for a breath or two.
This is the first movement: finding yourself in the body. Not in memory. Not in what's coming. Here.
Move your attention slowly upward. Legs. The weight of your hips against the seat. The slight pressure of your hands in your lap. The rise and fall of your chest. You are not trying to relax. You are noticing what is already present. The practice is the noticing.
Now place one hand flat against your sternum — your breastbone. Feel the warmth of your own palm. With each inhale, let your chest gently expand into that pressure. Breathe at a slow, even pace: count of four in, count of six out. The slightly extended exhale activates your parasympathetic system, and this rhythm — around five to six breaths per minute — brings your heartbeat and breath into a pattern called cardiac coherence. Heart rate variability deepens. The body finds a kind of internal order you can feel, if you're quiet enough.
Stay here. Breathe into your hand.
While you breathe, let your attention rest on what is actually present right now. The specific quality of light where you are sitting. The sounds in the room — not as interruptions, but as information about exactly where in the world you are. The slight coolness of the air inside your nostrils on the inhale. The weight of your own body, held.
Presence is not a mood or an achievement. It is a location. You are here. This moment has a texture.
Take three more slow breaths with your hand on your chest. Let the last exhale empty all the way — fully, completely — before the next inhale rises on its own.
When you're ready, open your eyes. Keep your hand where it is for one more breath. Let your gaze soften before it sharpens. Take in the room the way you might take in a room you've never been in before, with mild curiosity rather than habit.
You don't need to carry this into the rest of your day in any particular way. You don't need to hold onto it. Just notice, for a moment, what it felt like to be exactly here — in this body, in this room — for these few minutes.
That is where you always are, and now you know how to return.
