Now bring your attention to the center of your chest.
Don't imagine anything yet — just rest your awareness there. Feel the physical warmth of that space. The gentle rise and fall with each breath. If it helps, place one hand over your sternum and feel the contact of your palm against your shirt.
Breathe slowly into that space. With each inhale, let the chest soften slightly. With each exhale, let it warm.
After a few breaths, you may notice something kindling there — a quiet aliveness, a small brightness. It doesn't need to be dramatic. It might just be a slight ease, a settling. That is enough. That is the light we're working with.
Let that warmth stay in your chest as you bring someone to mind — someone you love without complication. A friend, a child, a pet, an elder. Let their face or presence come gently into your awareness.
Now, on your next exhale, let the warmth in your chest extend toward them. Not a thought about them, but a felt sense of extension — like warmth radiating from a lamp toward whatever is near it.
Silently, you might offer:
May you be at ease.
May you feel held.
May you know that you are not alone.
Take a breath. Let the words settle into the body rather than the mind. Feel the small expansion in your chest as you offer this.
Now widen the circle.
Bring to mind two or three more people — people you care for, people you know are carrying something right now. Let them appear loosely, without pressure. You don't need to focus on each one. Just let the sense of them be present.
On your next exhale, extend the warmth toward this small group. The same gesture — warmth moving outward from chest, like a slow pulse.
May you be at ease. May you feel held.
Breathe in. Feel your own chest still warm, still full. You are not depleting yourself. This kind of offering doesn't drain. It moves like a current that, in moving, stays lit.
Now let the circle open further.
You don't need to picture faces. Just let the felt sense of other people exist at the edge of your awareness — people in your neighborhood, your city, people you'll never meet who are sitting somewhere right now, breathing, carrying their own weight.
On the exhale, extend the warmth toward this wider field.
May you be at ease. May you know you are not alone.
You are not responsible for anyone else's state. This isn't about fixing or sending anything anyone didn't ask for. It's simply the act of including — of letting your awareness be wide enough that others exist inside it, held warmly.
Take a full breath in.
Let the exhale return your attention to your own chest — still warm, still yours.
Place both hands over your heart if they aren't already. Feel the contact.
Breathe here for a moment. Notice that the warmth you extended outward didn't leave you emptied. It may have even grown slightly, the way a candle flame doesn't shrink when it lights another.
When you're ready, take one slow breath and open your eyes.
The field you held in this practice doesn't disappear when the practice ends — it moves with you, quietly, for the rest of the day.
