The Space After Letting Go

The Space After Letting Go

A prolonged exhale activates the vagus nerve, shifting the nervous system toward parasympathetic dominance — heart rate variability rises, cortisol drops, and the body begins to release what it has been bracing against.

Sit with your back supported and your hands open in your lap, palms facing up. Take one slow breath and release it completely — longer than usual, until your lungs feel genuinely empty. Notice what happens in that pause before the next breath arrives. There is a gap there. Stay in it.

Now bring to mind something you have been holding tightly — a worry, a plan, an old story about yourself. Don't examine it. Just set it down the way you'd set a heavy bag on a table. Feel your shoulders drop. Feel the air around you grow roomier.

Thich Nhat Hanh taught that interbeing is made visible in the breath — that what we release does not vanish but returns to the larger flow. The science names the mechanism; he named the meaning. To let go is not to lose. It is to clear the channel through which light enters.

That open space is not emptiness. It is you, unhidden.
