What Florence Scovel Shinn knew about letting go

What Florence Scovel Shinn knew about letting go

When you write what you're carrying and then consciously release it, the prefrontal cortex engages — naming what lives in the body reduces amygdala reactivity, cortisol softens, and the nervous system begins to move toward coherence. The act of release is not passive. It is neurologically active.

Place both hands flat on the table in front of you. Feel the surface — its temperature, its weight bearing yours. Let your palms settle. This is not preparation for the practice. This is the practice beginning.

Notice what you're holding today. Not in the abstract — in the body. There may be flickering heat in the chest, words that hover at the edge of thought, uninvited memories surfacing without invitation. You don't need to resolve them. You only need to name them.

Reach for your journal. At the top of a fresh page, write: What am I releasing today?

Then write without editing. A name. A worry. A version of yourself you've been gripping. A hope that has hardened into demand. Let whatever comes, come.

Florence Scovel Shinn called this speaking the word — the act of bringing into language what has been tangled in silence. She understood something the neuroscience would later confirm: that naming a thing begins to loosen its hold. That release is not defeat. Release is not loss — it is the clearing that allows the light to enter.

When you've written what you're releasing, set the pen down. Place your hands back on the page. Feel it. What you have named is real. What you are releasing is real. And you remain here, solid and whole, after the letting go.

You are not smaller for releasing it. You are becoming more of yourself — not performing wholeness, but clearing the way for it to emerge.
