Sit with your spine upright but not rigid. Feet flat on the floor.
Take one slow breath in through your nose — not a performance of breathing, just a genuine, unhurried breath. Let it fill the space behind your sternum, where your hand is resting. Then a longer exhale through slightly parted lips.
Do this three times. Not to relax. Just to arrive.
Notice whatever you notice. A tightness. A hum. The ambient temperature of the room against your skin. You don't need to change any of it. You only need to notice that you are the one noticing — the quiet center behind the sensation.
Enter the Truth
Keep the hand on your chest.
Now bring to mind something that has felt outside your control recently. Don't dramatize it — just let it be present, like weather through a window. You can see it. You're not in it.
As it sits there, breathe into the chest again. Long in, longer out.
Here is what you are practicing: the moment between the event and your response. Most of the time, that moment is invisible — a reflex, a contraction, a reaching for the familiar feeling. But it exists. It has always existed. And right now, in this breath, you are standing inside it.
This is your sovereignty. Not power over what happens. Power over how you meet it.
Feel the warmth of your palm through your shirt. This warmth is not conditional. It is not waiting for the situation to resolve. It is here, unearned, already. It is the baseline from which you choose.
Breathe into that.
Anchor
On your next inhale, let your chest gently expand into your hand — not a forced puff, just an allowing. As though the heart itself is leaning into contact.
Hold the breath for a count of four. Not with tension. With intention.
Then exhale slowly, and as you do, let any particular position on the thing you were thinking about — what should happen, what it means, what you need it to become — release with the breath. Not forever. Just for now.
Inhale again. Expand again. Hold.
Repeat this cycle four more times.
You are not trying to feel happy about what you cannot control. You are not bypassing what is hard. You are practicing something more precise: keeping the chest open when every habit in you would close it. Meeting the unresolved thing from here — from warmth, from choice — rather than from wherever the reflex would take you.
That space is real. You can feel it. And it is entirely yours.
Close
When you are ready, take one final breath — slow, full, unhurried.
Before you move, notice how the hand on your chest feels now. Whether there is any difference in the weight of it. The warmth.
Whatever is waiting for you when you close this page — the conversation, the inbox, the unknown outcome — you will meet it as someone who has practiced, even briefly, choosing how to meet it.
That choice is absolute. It belongs only to you.
You can lower your hand now.
