The Still Point Beneath the Noise

The Still Point Beneath the Noise

When you rest your attention without grasping, slow exhalation shifts the nervous system toward parasympathetic dominance — vagal tone rises, HRV stabilizes, and the brain's default mode quiets enough to hear what was already there.

Sit with your back supported and your hands open in your lap. Feel the weight of your body pressing down — into the chair, into the floor. Take one slow breath and let it go completely.

Now, without reaching for anything, notice what remains when you stop looking. There is a place in you that is already still. Not created. Not earned. Just here, underneath the week's accumulated attention.

Rest your awareness there. If a thought comes, let it pass like a cloud moving across an otherwise unchanged sky. You are not the cloud. You are the sky that holds it.

Thich Nhat Hanh called this interbeing — the recognition that the open, undivided quality of awareness is not something you manufacture but something you uncover when you stop contracting. Every time you choose not to close around a thought, your attention expands. Discernment grows in the space you refused to fill.

This stillness is the body's own discernment — quiet, clear, already knowing.
