What the Body Knows Before You Do

Interoception — the brain's ongoing process of reading signals from inside the body — operates continuously beneath awareness. Research shows these bottom-up signals shape emotion, intuition, and decision-making before the thinking mind has caught up.

Sit or lie down. Close your eyes and take one slow breath — not a performance of breathing, just air moving in and then out.

Now scan downward from the crown of your head. Not looking for problems. Looking for information. Notice where you feel dense or thick. Where there's a hum or a held quality. Where something pulls slightly, like a thread under tension.

Pause wherever you land. Place your hand there if you can. Feel the temperature of your own skin.

Florence Scovel Shinn called this the super-conscious mind — intelligence that arrives whole, without reasoning its way to you. She understood what the science now names: the signal was never missing. What we practice is learning to trust it.

Ask — not with words, but with attention — what is this trying to tell me?

You don't need an answer. The asking is enough.

Your body has been paying attention all along.
